<a href="http://www.uk-anime.net/newsitem/Terror-Cotta_to_release_Gyo_as_Tokyo_Shark_Attack_in_the_UK_this_August.html">UK Anime Network</a> has spotted a DVD listing on <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tokyo-Shark-Attack-Takayuki-Hirao/dp/B0085MHEKO/">Amazon</a> for the recent anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s Gyo. The anime OVA is being released by the Terror-cotta horror label, an off-shoot of the <a href="http://terracottadistribution.com/">Terracotta label</a> which specialises in bringing Asian horror movies to the UK. The OVA was screened earlier this year in London at the <a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/news/2858/the-4th-annual-terracotta-far-east-film-festival-">Terracotta Far East Film Festival</a> but until now there was no news on if there anyone was picking up the UK distribution rights.


Synopsis
<em>The story centres around Kaori who is visiting Okinawa and its beautiful beaches with friends when she find herself caught in the middle of a land invasion by bizarre and aggressive fish which scuttle on land with sharp metal legs. Things are about to get much worse for Kaori as she finds that the deadly fish are spreading from the island.</em>


Gyo is one of the most well-known stories from legendary manga-ka Junji Ito who regularly has his weird fiction adapted for the big screen as Uzumaki and the numerous Tomie live -action film show. Directed by Takayuki Hirao (Garden of Sinners) and produced by Atsuhiro Iwakami (A-Channel) and Hikaru Kondo (Fate/Zero) with the Ufotable (Garden of Sinners, Coyote Ragtime Show) animating it. Puzzlingly the film is listed as Tokyo Shark Attack but the DVD cover reads as Gyo.

Hah, this film looks like it would be a laugh, I'm glad its getting a release

Junji Ito's work is a great example of weird fiction. Whole summer days have been ruined for me by him and his chilling work. Spiral is the creepiest although I liked the live-action film and found it wonderfully relaxing.

I'm planning to get it when it comes out.

Quite cool to see a live action focused label pick up a niche thing like this, hope it does OK for them.

getting this

I've got the first volume of Ito's Uzumaki. Some of the imagery is deliciously disturbing, but a couple of the stories border on the farcical. I can only assume it was intentional, and it didn't really work for me. I'll be passing on Gyo, I think.

There's an amusing "gyo in 5 minutes" or something vid on youtube that sums it up fairly well I think.

Don't forget that Cine du Monde released ICE last year, in case it's slipped under your radar.

I love the Terror Cotta label name.
