Paranoia Agent's review

Paranoia Agent scored this with 8/10. Disagree?

Appearing amidst a flurry of hyperbole and rave reviews, Full Metal Alchemist has achieved Naruto-sized success in its native Japan and rapidly garnered something of a cult following over here and in the US. Having had an early peek at the opening episodes I was surprised if not a little disappointed by what I saw.

Things kick off with a sinister looking experiment which the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse hope will revive their dead mother. Ignoring the golden rule of alchemy 'to gain something you must first give something of equal value' disaster strikes, Edward loses his left leg and right arm, and Alphonse loses his body.
Fast forward half a decade, Edward has become a state alchemist and Alphonse's soul is bound to a gargantuan suit of armour. They are seeking the fabled Sorcerer's stone that can reverse the law of equal loss and bring their mother back to life.

The first thing that struck me about Full Metal Alchemist was its surprisingly mature thematic content, the opening scenes showing the brothers' disastrous resurrection attempt hints at a darker side lurking just beneath that kiddie-friendly exterior. There are also some interesting and pertinent arguments involving science and religion that parallel the alchemists' aversion and rejection of fundamental spiritual beliefs. Both help to flesh out the world of alchemy and add depth and feeling to an otherwise familiar tale.
It's not all gloom and doom though and a lot of the entertainment in these early episodes comes from the Elric's themselves, Edward Elric the full metal alchemist of the title is a brash, mildly egocentric but eminently likeable hero whilst Alphonse is a tentative, timid, tin plated hulk. The juxtaposition works wonders making for one of the most original pairings in recent memory. Being alchemists they can conjure weaponry and transform literally anything through the power of transmutation, for me alchemy is this series' major hook and I'm intrigued to see how far the creators will
push this weird and wonderful science in later episodes.
One criticism though is the distinct feeling of familiarity in some of the early episodes, they're by no means unoriginal but retread some familiar anime ideals. Still a strong framework has been laid out very early on and I get the feeling the best has yet to come.

I continue to be amazed by the level of quality persistent in today's animation and Full Metal Alchemist only reinforces that amazement, striking, flowing animation enlivens some tremendous character design, the backgrounds mix lavish interiors with dreary sun scorched landscapes and the level of movement and fluidity is spectacular. If they maintain this quality into the next volume Full Metal Alchemist could well be one of the finest looking shows in recent memory.

In Summary

A surprisingly solid and assured debut, it may be a tad familiar but there's enough charm and invention to single it out amongst the crowd. Not as perfect as many would have liked this still has massive potential that will doubtless reveal itself as the series goes on. Full Metal mania starts here.

As much as I grew to love Full Metal Alchemist, it's definently a slow starter. The signs are there though that this will be a great series, from the heart-breaking flashback to the Elric brothers past to the way they decide to move forward.

This is just yet another fantastic series from BONES too, the anime studio behind other personal favourites that include RahXephon and Wolf's Rain.

Anyway, it's great to see Full Metal Alchemist hit the UK so soon and I just can't wait to revisit this long masterpiece.

I'm disappointed that they only put four episodes onto one dvd, especially since the whole series is fifty-one episodes long.

It is a slow starter, I admit, but having seen all of it subbed I encourage everyone to persevere - you won't be disappointed. FMA has just about everything to make it a masterpiece.

It's great that it's come to the UK market so quickly. A definite keeper.

I have to personally agree with Mizu, I was always disappointed with the number of episodes on the DVD and also the length of the series means that FUNimation is hoping that the anime will bring more people, therefore making more money cause we have to buy more DVD's.

But as a massive fan of FMA before its dubbing through subbing, I was disappointed with the trailer and hated the voices. But I must give it to FUNimation that they have done a better job this time than they did with the Dragonball Z dubbing.

I've watched every type of anime near possible, and this anime seems to be completely different from anything I have ever watched. Well worth watching, but that's because I import everything from America. Got the first two volumes and the UK watchers are in for a treat

FMA 10/10

I personally disagree with the assumption that it starts off slow. The only reason my housemate kept watching it was due to the strong start in the first two episodes. My housemate cant get into many anime series due to the way they start off, but with FMA he was hooked and became a rabid fan instantly.
I personally love this anime and it is definatly one of my all time favourite series. It has just about everything I was looking for in an anime and a very good soundtrack to boot.
A must see for all anime fans out there!

Having watched the fansubbed series, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The first few episodes are just there to layout some foundation behind some minor characters as well as introduce you to the concept of alchemy.
Definitely slow starting...if i recall correctly, there was nine episodes of that before it got into the proper story

An amazing opening to what I hope will continue to be a fantastic series. The characters are very distinctive, the character of Alphonse playing very strongly on the juxtaposition between his size and his neuroses. Contrary to other opinion, I didn't find it a slow start at all. The opening scenes created a tension that led us to be interested in the back story, and while the first 2 episodes were admittedly a touch confusing, it immediately plunges us into the world of Alchemy in a way that hooks us completely. Then they begin the backstory, which explains the reasons behind their journey to great effect.
The only problems I found were that in the sub, the japanese characters could occasionally obscure the subtitles making them harder to read, and they sometimes went too quickly, though this is minor. A major problem I have is that they only managed to fit 4 20 minute episodes on the DVD, which is a shame considering other DVD's can hold many more episodes. If this is just a marketing ploy it's a shameless one, and it's going to end up a very expensive addition to my collection.
Those aside, the program is immensely enjoyable and I look forward to seeing further installments as they are released.
