House of the Flying Daggers on FILM4, Wednesday at 10.55pm
Following on from his Hero, Zhang Yimou’s House Of Flying Daggers initially appears to be another, similar exercise in arthouse chop-socky. It even comes from many of the same team (director, writers, producers, designers). It’s a very different film from Hero, however. The great distinctions are the focus and sense of scale – Hero had an epic scope and was concerned with the politics of unification. House Of Flying Daggers is more of a melodramatic romance.
