Images of Production I.G.’s Upcoming Film, A Letter to Momo

A poster and still has been released for Production I.G.’s Next Project, A Letter to Momo.

Synopsis

Momo is a young girl who grew up in a big city. However, following the premature loss of her father, she has to move with her mother to the old family house on a remote island. Here, time seems to have stopped: old wooden buildings, holy shrines surrounded by trees, fields painstakingly carved out from steep hills… and no shopping mall.

Needless to say, Momo is not too overenthusiastic about this new environment. Most of all, her heart is still feeling uneasy about an unfinished letter left by her father. A letter that contained only two words: “Dear Momo…”

What was dad going to say?

One day, exploring the attic of her new big house, Momo finds a dusty and worn out book. And from that moment, something really unexpected starts happening around her…

Production on the film has long been underway but this is the first poster and still to have been released by the studio.

For anybody familiar with Production I.G. from their groundbreaking titles such as Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell, this latest project may come as a bit of a surprise as it seems to be a coming of age drama. Surprise increases when you see the name of the director is Hiroyuki Okiura who debuted with Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. Although he has been involved with movies such as Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, A Letter to Momo is his first major directing role since Jin-Roh.

Animation is being supervised by Masashi Ando (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away), background from Hiroshi Ono (Kiki’s Delivery Service) and the project also has animators from a myriad of other high-profile films such as Evangelion 2.22 The Sky Crawlers, Tokyo Godfathers and Summer Wars.

The theme song is being composed by Yuko Hara, member of Southern All Stars. The film is set to go into exhibition in 2012.
