Doj-Con : Scotland’s largest free anime convention unveil 2013 plans
Anime UK News received news about Scotland’s largest, free anime convention so here it is:
On Saturday 13th April 2013, the University of Dundee Union plays host to DOJ-CON, Scotland’s largest, free anime convention.
Organised predominantly by 4th year animation students and alumni of Duncan of Jordanston, DOJ-CON is a fundraiser event with all proceeds going towards their degree show in May 2013. The event is funded by DUSA (Dundee University Student’s Association).
The event includes film screenings, industry presentations, competitions, and cosplaying (a type of performance art in which participants wear costumes that represent a specific character, usually from fiction, or idea).
DOJ-CON will also host a professional photo booth by Mr Drew Photography and Scott Baxter, who’ll be on hand to photograph everybody’s costumes.
DOJ-CON will feature talks from guest speakers from the animation, games, comic and anime industry as well as from specialists and enthusiasts. Notable guest speakers include Phil Vaughan and Dr Chris Murray (comic book industry), Rosalie Newcombe (music in video games) and Alisa Partridge (Lolita fashion). As well as screenings of anime films and shorts throughout the day, features will include a reel of previous animation graduate films and a preview reel of 2013 graduate film clips.
The convention will feature an Artist’s Alley; a chance for up and coming anime/ fan art/ comic artists and illustrators to sell their work, promote their businesses and make contacts. There will also be a Games area with an entire floor of the Union dedicated to game playing
The event will be rounded off with an after party, and in 2013 the Union will play host to Nanashi Dansu, an Eastern Asian music style club night run by David Skelley. Nanashi is new to the convention but has been running in Glasgow for 3 years.
President, Slava Lawson says of the event:
“This is the one day of the year Dundee really shows its geeky side. Anybody NOT dressed up in fabulous fictional costume will stand out from the crowd. The organisation of DOJ-CON is on-going, but we’re really happy with everyone’s enthusiasm. The amount of support that we’ve received from the guest speakers we’ve invited as well as the attendees who remember last year’s convention is absolutely incredible.”
