The Tale of Princess Kaguya Receives Oscar Nomination

The 87th Acadamy Awards are almost on us and soon, we’ll be able to see talented professionals from across the film industry gathering to a lavish ceremony to honour the world’s most lauded films of the previous year. With the latest awards show set to take place on 22nd February, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the selection of movies who have been honoured with a nomination in one or more of the various categories.

One nomination worth mentioning, is Studio Ghibli’s The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Directed by Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies), this unique animated feature is based on the Japanese folk tale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. The movie has already earned a number of awards and accolades across the globe, including winning the Animation Film Award at the 68th Mainichi Film Awards and the 40th Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, as well as nominations for the 37th Japan Academy Prize and 67th Cannes Film Festival.

The movie will be going up against Disney’s Big Hero 6, Focus Features’ The Boxtrolls, DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon 2 and StudioCanal’s Song of the Sea.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya is currently slated to be released in UK cinemas on 20th March 2015.
