Free Manga Talks at the British Museum
Anime News Network have run a story listing a series of free talks connected to the world of manga. These talks are running as an accompaniment to a free manga exhibition called Manga Now: Three Generations which is on at the British Museum and features newly-commissioned work by the artists Tetsuya Chiba (Ashita no Joe), Yukinobu Hoshino (2001 Nights) and Hikaru Nakamura (Saint Young Men, Arakawa Under the Bridge).
The talks run from September into November and are all free. Here are the talks listed by Anime News Network:
Friday September 18
1.15 p.m. to 2 p.m. – Start local, go global: manga in world culture – Talk by Helen McCarthy in Room 3.
Saturday October 10
2 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Drawing manga: practice and context – Demonstration by Hugo Yoshikawa in Stevenson Lecture Theatre. This event must be booked here.
Tuesday October 20
1.15 p.m. to 2 p.m. – Shōjo manga: girls’ comics from Japan – Talk by critic Paul Gravett and manga artist Akiko Hatsu in Room 92.
Thursday November 5
1.15 p.m. to 2.m. – Manga now, ukiyo-e then – Talk by Tim Clark in Room 3.
Wednesday November 11
1.15 p.m. to 2 p.m. Manga now at the British Museum – Talk by Nicole Rousmaniere in Room 3.
Friday November 13
1.30 p.m. to 230 p.m. – Big swingers and geezer girls: golf manga in post-war Japan – Talk by Angus Lockyer of SOAS. This event must be booked here in the BP Lecture Theatre.
6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. 0 Otaku Attack – ‘An evening of manga-inspired entertainment and digital activities, including performances by shamisen player Hibiki Ichikawa and traditional Japanese enka and minyo songs by Akari Mochizuki. Cosplayers welcome.’ This event will take place in Great Court and Samsung Digital Discovery Centre.
