The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1 Anime Limited Editions & UK Home Video Details Revealed

Distributor Manga Entertainment has revealed their plans to offer The Rising of the Shield Hero with both regular and limited-edition releases, as well as release dates for both parts of the show’s first season.

The first part has been made available for pre-order since a couple of months ago but now has a finalised release date and limited edition variation available for the United Kingdom & Ireland fans.

Part 1:

The regular Blu-ray and DVD editions will include both the English dub and the original Japanese language with English subtitles, covering episodes 1 to 13. On-disc features include Promotional Video, TV Spot, and Textless Songs.

The limited-edition Blu-ray & DVD combo pack continues the trend of Manga Entertainment’s previous handlings with the Funimation limited editions by keeping the contents as close as possible (if not, identical). This release is expected to include a rigid box to house both parts of the first season, as well as a 120-page Artbook, 4 Metallic Art Cards, Linkable metal keychains of Raphtalia, Filo, and Naofumi, Vinyl sticker shields, and a Fabric poster of Raphtalia and Naofumi.

The release date for Part 1 is currently 1st June 2020. You can view the listings below (if available):

Part 2:

The regular Blu-ray and DVD editions will include both the English dub and the original Japanese language with English subtitles, covering episodes 14 to 25. On-disc features include Promotional Video, TV Spot, and Textless Songs.

The limited-edition Blu-ray & DVD combo pack is a unique case for both Manga Entertainment and Funimation as it comes with one special item – a 200 page light novel booklet which covers material that was featured in the Japanese Blu-ray releases. It’s not known who the translator is for this booklet as the original light novel source was distributed in English markets by One Peace Books.

The release date for Part 2 is currently 1st June 2020. You can view the listings below (if available):

The first season of The Rising of the Shield Hero aired in January 2019 as part of the Winter 2019 anime season and was simulcasted by Crunchyroll with an English dub, with Funimation following suit not long after as part of their now-defunct partnership. The anime was animated by studio Kinema Citrus and is based on the light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi. The show was also co-produced by Crunchyroll and published by Kadokawa Pictures. During Crunchyroll Expo in 2019, a second and third anime season has been greenlit.

Plot Synopsis (via Crunchyroll):

“Iwatani Naofumi, a run-of-the-mill otaku, finds a book in the library that summons him to another world. He is tasked with joining the sword, spear, and bow as one of the Four Cardinal Heroes and fighting the Waves of Catastrophe as the Shield Hero. Excited by the prospect of a grand adventure, Naofumi sets off with his party. However, merely a few days later, he is betrayed and loses all his money, dignity, and respect. Unable to trust anyone anymore, he employs a slave named Raphtalia and takes on the Waves and the world. But will he really find a way to overturn this desperate situation?”
