My Gently Raised Beast Volumes 6 and 7 Review
Blondina and Amon’s story is reaching its climax. After growing up together, in secret and hidden from the eyes of the nobility, the youngest human princess and the prince of the divine beasts are not keeping their friendship a secret anymore. Their relationship started as friends, but now that they are both adults it’s time to take the next step. And what better way than during the banquet to celebrate the peace between humans and divine beasts?
Amon always had his eyes set on ‘Briddy’ (Blondina), but he doesn’t know how to express himself in the ‘human way’. This is where Blondina’s father, the emperor, and her brother, Crown Prince Lart, both keen to support Blondina’s happiness and the peace with the divine beasts, teach Amon how to show his feelings as a human. It comes as a surprise to Blondina. She knows she loves Amon, but her stubborn head still cannot fully understand that Amon is in love with her as well.
Everything seems to go well for the couple and for the two races, but Adellai, Blondina’s half-sister, is not happy at the attention that her father and brother are giving to the girl she considers inferior. Now that she found the descendant of Barahan, Joseph, she’s eager to show her new power and her vision to her father. To do so, she exploits Joseph’s power and start attacking the imperial palace. Her father and brother’s words don’t affect her at all as she’s ready to start another war between the races and come out on top. To do so she needs to get rid of Blondina and Amon first, but neither of them are easy to find nor to control. When Philip, a noble who decided to help Adellai once Blondina refused him, shows his true intentions and proceed with his betrayal, Blondina needs to act fast and stop both parties from sustaining more losses.
There is a lot of action in Volumes 6 and 7 compared to the rest of the series. We have reached the climax of the story—the battle between the humans and divine beasts who stand for peace and the humans who want to be superior. It’s a battle between sisters that started when they were both kids, and now it might be too late to repair a relationship that never really existed. The emperor and Lart are to blame as well for what is happening. Although they repented their actions on how they treated Blondina when she was a child, they never helped nor tried to bridge the relationship between the two sisters. Especially the emperor as he supported Adellai’s endeavours until it was too late to stop her.
There are also a lot of family issues going on in My Gently Raised Beast, and while some are getting resolved, some are still left wide open. However, the emperor and the crown prince both have grown in their roles as father and older brother respectively. It takes tragedies for them to finally see the truth of their behaviour, but in the end they get there.
Blondina has always been sweet-natured and meek even when she was mistreated. She only spoke up when people dear to her were getting hurt. But now she has Amon to protect her and support her whatever she decides to do. And apparently Amon and Blondina’s relationship goes back to a previous life. Briddy has been having dreams all her life, but she couldn’t remember them nor fully see the people in them. However, now that the final battle is drawing near, her dreams tell her a history that has been lost, one that shows Braham’s true identity and goal.
The illustrations are simple, with more details in the background settings than the character themselves. The artist uses pastel colours to keep that magical romance vibe, switching to darker shades during battles. Although blood and human losses are shown, the scenes are not gory nor too violent. The sexy scenes instead are not shown, but they happen ‘with the door closed’ so the readers know what takes place but don’t see it. The narration accompanying the illustrations flows seamlessly, although I found a dialogue with a repetition of words, which I assume was been missed during editing.
My Gently Raised Beast started as a web novel by Early Flower and was adapted into a manhwa by Kim JunJun with illustrations by Yeoseulki. It’s serialised on Webtoon, and the print edition in the English language is published by Ize Press. Volume 8 was released in October.
