The website for the forthcoming anime movie adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato went live with this interesting trailer.
Space Battleship Yamato is a big name in the anime world. The space opera involves the resurrection of the legendary World War II battleship as a new spaceship is built from its remains to protect earth from aliens. Although originally conceived in 1973 by series producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki when legendary manga creator Leiji Matsumoto (Captain Harlock) was brought into the production his art and designs were seen as the most important aspect by fans. The television anime aired in the 1974 and it has had numerous sequels since, the most recent being a live-action film entitled Space Battleship Yamato starring Takuya Kimura and Meisa Kuroki.
The new anime film is a coproduction between the anime studios XEBEC and AIC. Amongst the staff that have been confirmed is director Yutaka Izubuchi, who worked on giant robot anime RahXephon, and Nobuteru Yuki, who worked on Escaflowne and Record of Lodoss War, is acting as character designer. Experienced mechanical designer Makoto Kobayashi who has worked on shows like Last Exile also confirmed that he is working on the remake. The story for the movie is based on the original story by late Yamato series producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki.
The film will get a theatrical release in Japan on the 7th of April, 2012.
