Princess Mononoke in the Theatre
Earlier this week Studio Ghibli announced that the anime film Princess Mononoke (1997) is getting a stage adaptation with the support of Studio Ghibli. This will be its first stage play adaptation and it will be by The Whole Hog Theatre who are based in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Performances will be held from the 02nd of April to the 6th of April at London’s New Diorama Theatre in 2013. Tickets are currently available for pre-order on New Diorama Theatre’s website for £13.80 (£11.50 concession), both with booking fee included.
According to the organisers the project has been in development for over a year. The organisers state: “With the co-operation of Studio Ghibli, Whole Hog Theatre presents the world’s first theatrical staging of Hayao Miyazaki’s renowned animated film.
Young warrior Ashitaka is a marked man. Cursed by a demon god while defending his village, he must leave his home forever to seek a cure. In the forbidding forests to the west, he is forced to reconcile the warring human forces and the animal deities of times past. In the midst of this bitter and bloody conflict, he meets the wolf god Moro and her human child San: Princess Mononoke. Using giant puppets made from recycled materials, visceral, physical storytelling and original live music, Studio Ghibli’s epic ecological fable is retold for the stage.”
