Ryutaro Nakamura Passes Away

Tragic news was recently announced in Japan informing the world that Ryutaro Nakamura, director of Kino’s Journey and Serial Experiments Lain, passed away at the age of 58 on June 29th after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

The official Twitter feed for the Chibi Neko Tom no Dai Bōken anime broke the announcement after permission was given by his family.

There is now news on what was going to happen to the anime project Despera, a sci-fi story set in Tokyo in the 1920’s which would have seen Nakamura work with Yoshitoshi Abe again. Ryutaro Nakamura was probably one of the more interesting and boundary pushing directors in modern anime and so this is a tragedy. Anime UK News recently held simul-watches for Kino’s Journey and Serial Experiments Lain and it’s safe to say that everyone that took part was affected in some way.
