Anime UK News Autumn 2014 Anime Preview Part 2

Welcome to Part Two of the Autumn 2014 Anime Preview!

It’s time for another season preview because at the end of September we get 30+ new anime shows to enjoy, so it’s best to start picking what you want to watch now!

It will be a shame to see the summer season end what with the large variety of awesome anime. In fact it might be possible to say that 2014 is shaping up to be a rather excellent year for anime with many titles in many genres providing the sort of adventurous and exciting entertainment that creates otaku out of ordinary people, and the titles aired over the summer have played a massive part.

The autumn season is just like every other season in that it is made up of a variety of titles aimed at different audiences and all of that content can fill hundreds of hours of air time. There are ikemen comedies, moe titles, and lots of fantasy action titles that will appeal to everyone from shounen and shoujo to beyond. Even if there are fewer original show with insane synopses, it is simply mind-boggling to take it all in – which is why preview guides like this exist.

Anime UK News have put together a two-part autumn season preview which lists nearly all of the new television shows that will air in Japan from September to December and there is a lot to enjoy.

I was able to get this entire thing together thanks to a season guide, Anime News Network and MyAnimeList. I hope you can find something to watch when the autumn season launches. Stay tuned to the forums for streaming announcements!

The story takes place in the era of the gods, year 300. Yuuna Yuuki lives an ordinary life as a second year middle school student, but she’s also a member of the “Hero Club,” where club activities involve dealing with a mysterious being called “Vertex.”

Is this sci-fi or simply slice of life? Is this cute girls doing silly things or cute magical girls doing silly things and battling? The promotional video gives little away but the synopsis, copied directly from Anime News Network, suggests that there could be monster bashing. It is animated by Studio Gokumi (Saki Episode of Side A, A-Channel) and written and directed by Makoto Uezu and Seiji Kishi respectively, the two deserve respect for overseeing the wonderful comedy fantasy Humanity Has Declined. They also worked together on other anime such as Danganronpa The Animation and Devil Survivor 2 The Animation.

Denki-gai no Honya-san

Synopsis

Umio has a part time job at a manga store named Books Umanohone in the middle of “Electric Town” in the heart of the city (think Akihabara). Umio’s friends, co-workers and the manga loving customers he meets are a cast of strange and unique characters who get along really well.

Wow, the 8-bit chiptune music on the PV takes me back to some old school video games which were so hard they made you cry. It also makes me think this is going to be a meta-comedy. We’ve had gag anime set in schools, spaceships, manga studios and local government offices and now we get one set in a book store with Denki-gai no Honya-san (Electric Town Bookstore Worker) which is adapted from Asato Mizui’s manga. There are a lot of pluses for this anime in comedy terms. It’s animated by Shin-Ei Animation, the gang who animated Shin chan and the fantastially hilarious Tonari no Seki-kun and Hare+Guu. The writer is Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, writer on Level E, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes and Wooser’s Hand-to-Mouth Life as well as the more serious anime adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s manga Monster. Music comes from Hiroshi Takaki (AKB0048, Kyousogiga ONA). The director is Masafumi Sato, a man who worked on School Rumble.

Staff: Masafumi Seto (Director), Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (Series Composition), Asato Mizu (Original Creator), Hiroshi Takaki (Music), Yurie Kuniyuki (Character Design/Chief Animation Director)

Voice Actors: Minami Tsuda (Sensei), Natsumi Takamori (Hiota), Ayana Taketatsu (Fu Girl), Mei Aizawa (Kameki), Yu Kobayashi (G Men)

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (April is Your Lie)

Synopsis

Kosei Arima was a piano prodigy who was known far and wide but when his mother passed away, he had a mental breakdown while performing at a concert. Now, he has abandoned the piano and can no longer hear the sound of any piano even though his hearing is perfectly fine. Then he met Kaori Miyazono, a beautiful, free spirited violinist whose playing style reflects her personality. Together, the two help Kosei regain his love for music and life.

People who have attended this year’s Japan Foundation tour or are familiar with Japanese films will recognise hints of the rather good 2007 film Shindo (Wonder Child) with this one. In a season with a few shoujo manga titles this one has a few things going for it considering it’s animated by A-1 Pictures, the studio who have animated Black Butler and the gorgeous Aldnoah.Zero. The scripts are handled by Takao Yoshioka, the person who worked on arguably the best anime of last year, WATAMOTE, which featured some of the strongest characterisation, emotional range and sharp, dark observations on human nature. Masaru Yokoyama (Arakawa Under the Bridge) is in charge of music and Yukiko Aikei (Accel World) holds two roles as character designer and chief animation director).

Staff: Kyohei Ishiguro (Director), Takao Yoshioka (Series Composition/Screenplay), Naoshi Arakawa (Original Creator), Masaru Yokoyama (Music), Yukiko Aikei (Character Design/(Chief Animation Director), Hisayo Usui (Art Director)

Donten ni Warau (Laughing Under the Clouds)

Synopsis

The story takes place during the Meiji era and, as Japan modernises, those known as samurai are slowly fading away into the pages of history. However, there are those who won’t go without a fight and because of them the crime rate increases. The government decides to create an inescapable lake prison which is only accessible by water. Three boys of the Kumo family are assigned to transport the criminals to their new “home”.

This 12 episode anime is based on a manga that was first serialised in 2011 and is now drawing to a close in a final chapter released just before this article went live. A cursory glance would leave one with the feeling that it’s all about samurai ikemen battling monsters and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! The Meiji era is a fascinating time (almost as fascinating as the Bakumatsu era!) what with Japan beginning its process of westernisation and many anime and manga are set in that period, like Rurouni Kenshin.

The director is Hiroshi Haraguchi, a relatively new name who has worked as an episode director on Eureka Seven and Xam’d: Lost Memories. Most interestingly, he was involved in Fuse: Memoirs of a Huntress, which this show looks similar to in tone. Yuuya Takahashi, writer for Tiger & Bunny, is in charge of series composition.

Staff: Hiroshi Haraguchi (Director), Yuuya Takahashi (Series Composition), Kemuri Karakara (Original Creator), Takao Maki (Character Design), Shuichiro Fukuhiro (Music)

Voice Actors: Tsubasa Yonaga (Chutaro Kumo), Yuichi Nakamura (Tenka Kumo), Yuuki Kaji (Soramaru Kumo), Shinichiro Miki (Naoto Kagami), Mamiko Noto (Nishiki)

Psycho-Pass 2

Synopsis

In the future, the police have guns named Dominators that can detect a suspect’s “crime factor” by measuring their state of mind and personality. This technique is termed “Psycho-Pass” and if the suspect’s crime factor is above a certain limit, the gun will fire.

At the end of the last season, detective Akane Tsunemori discovered the true nature of the Sybilla System and due to her belief in legal order chooses to obey the system. She now takes the head of her department and take command of a new set of enforcers. As she transitions into her new role, a new criminal looks set to challenge the system.

Psycho-Pass was one of the hits of the last few years, a gritty crime thriller which stood out for its intellectual reach, strong world building and collection of compelling characters like Shogo Makishima. The first season ended on a breathtakingly cynical note not often seen in anime. It left the door wide open for a sequel in a world that many have come to admire and want more of.

Some things remain the same. Katsuyuki Motohiro and Naoyoshi Shiotani return as directors. There are some changes. Gen Urobuchi is not as heavily involved in this season and Tow Ubukata is taking over series composition. Ubukata’s work on Mardock Scramble and Le Chevalier D’Eon should have fans breathing a sigh of relief since both feature strong writing. Kyoji Asano is the character designer and he has been involved in character design with Attack on Titan. A film is currently in the works.

Staff: Katsuyuki Motohiro (Chief Director), Naoyoshi Shiotani (Director), Tow Ubukata (Series Composition), Akira Amano (Original Character Design), Kyoji Asano (Character Design/Chief Animation Director), Gen Urobuchi (Story Concept)

Voice Actors: Kana Hanazawa (Akane Tsunemori), Kenji Nojima (Nobuchika Ginoza), Shizuka Itou (Yayoi Kunizuka), Keiji Fujiwara (Sakuya Tougane), Ayane Sakura (Mika Shimotsuki), Masumi Asano (Risa Aoyanagi),

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

Synopsis

Shirou Emiya is a normal student who finds his life changed when he is plunged into a battle for the Holy Grail, an item that can fulfill a person’s wish. Contestants in this battle are given servants to help them battle.

The new Fate/stay night is a two cour TV anime that will follow the ‘Unlimited Blade Works’ route from the original game. The first half premieres this fall while the second part launches in April 2015.

The director is Takahiro Miura and this is his biggest project in a career working in various anime and films ranging from the CG Resident Evil films to Crayon Shin-chan. Music is composed by Hideyuki Fukasawa and this is a good sign because he has created stunning scores for the epic Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto and the underrated TV adaptation of Flowers of Evil.

Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins)

Synopsis

A group of much-feared knights known as the Seven Deadly Sins are accused of conspiring to overthrow the monarchy of the kingdom of Britannia by the king’s guard, the Holy Knights. This was all a ruse to get them sent into exile as Princess Elizabeth discovers the truth just before the Holy Knights assassinate her father and seize the throne. Elizabeth goes on the run and seeks to enlist the Seven Deadly Sins to help take back the kingdom!

This will surely please shounen anime fans, not just because the anime is based on a manga that is a pretty popular and highly-rated adventure but also because it is directed by Tensai Okamura, the guy who directed two solid action/shounen titles in the form of Darker than Black and Blue Exorcist. He also directed Wolf’s Rain, which is a superior adventure series. If the visuals don’t quite get the viewer hyped enough then the music will because it is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano whose work can be heard in Blue Exorcist (where it was fun), mecha destruction porn Aldnoah.Zero (epic) and Attack on Titan (spectacular). Writing duties are handled by Okamura’s regular collaborator, Shotaro Suga (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Blood+).

Staff: Tensai Okamura (Director), Shotaro Suga (Series Composition), Hiroyuki Sawano (Music), Keigo Sasaki (Character Design/Animation Director), Nakaba Suzuki (Original Creator)

Orenchi no Furo Jijou (The Circumstances in My Home’s Bathtub)

Synopsis

High school student Tatsumi is pretty self-sufficient since he lives by himself and looks after his home. However, when a devastatingly handsome and self-centered merman named Wakasa moves into the bathtub in Tatsumi’s home, Tatsumi finds himself experiencing a whole new world of trouble.

Don’t you hate it when an ikemen merman invades your bathroom? Witness how one takes over a high schooler’s bath in this slice of life comedy that originates from a four-panel manga. The premise is slim but it should be fun. It is directed by Sayo Aoi, a person familiar with comedy and romance having worked on Kids on the Slope, Sound of the Sky as well as directing two strong episodes of Zankyou no Terror. Yuniko Ayana is adapting the manga for the small screen. Ayana has written for some strong drama series like Bakuman, Natsuiro Kiseki and she also wrote scripts for the wonderful fantasy comedy Humanity Has Declined.

This is a reverse harem based on a girl’s mobile game and it features a great voice cast. In an interesting move, the director, Noriyaki Akitaya, switches from helming the Persona 3 movies to this title. He’s a solid director considering that he has helmed Bakuman, so one wonders what he will make of this. Gundam G no Reconguista

Synopsis

I have taken the synopsis straight from Anime News Network.

Some time has passed since the end of the Universal Century, a history marked by space colonization and space warfare.

Humanity’s prosperity, which ushered in a new era known as Regild Century (R.C.), was believed to endure alongside the global peace.

It is the year R.C.1014.

The Capital Tower is an orbital elevator that rose above the Earth’s surface and linked Earth and space. As the conduit of the Photon Battery energy source to the surface, it is regarded as sacred.

Beruri Zenamu is in the middle of training for the Capital Guard (established to protect the Capital Tower), when the tower is attacked by G-Serufu — a highly maneuverable mobile suit with technology that is not from any known country.

Beruri, who joins the battle in the maintenance mobile suit Rekuten, successfully captures the G-Serufu. However, Beruri feels something for the space pirate girl named Aiida Reihanton who piloted the G-Serufu. It is the same feeling he has for G-Serufu, even though he supposedly never seen it before. The G-Serufu, which should only be operable under specific conditions, is somehow started up by Beruri.

The objective of Aiida and the space pirates who attacked the Capital Tower, and the fate followed by Beruri who was chosen by G-Serufu, will lead to truths that will shake the entire Regild Century era.

This year marks Gundam’s 35th anniversary and as a result, a new show has been commission with franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino returning to expand the original tale with a new television series that will air in October. Music comes from the brilliant Yugo Kanno, the man who provided the atmospheric music for Psycho-Pass. His work can be heard in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. The new Gundam series is expected to run for two seasons.

Staff: Yoshiyuki Tomino (Chief Director), Yugo Kanno (Music), Kenichi Yoshida (Character Design), Tomoaki Okada (Art Design), Yoshiyuki Tomino, Hajime Yatate (Original Creator)

Voice Actors: Mark Ishii (Bellri Zenam), Yu Shimamura (Aidan Surgan), Ayahi Takagaki (Manny Ambassada), Ryota Ohsaka (Klim Nick), Takuya Sato (Luin Lee), Yukari Fukui (Raraiya Monday)
