Hoozuki no Reitetsu

Website

Supernatural black-comedy Hoozuki no Reitetsu has been one of the stand-out anime this year in terms of quality and apparently sales. It features a lot of references to Japanese mythology, smart character based humour and bone-dry wit. Fans in Japan have been so charmed that they are showing it great support and buying both Natsumi Eguchi’s manga and the anime which was animated by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan). Taking note of this popularity, the makers of the film are going to certain cinemas in Tokyo and screening some of the OAVs that will be bundled with volumes 17 – 19 of the manga.

The original series can be found on Crunchyroll.

Synopsis

Hoozuki (Yasumoto) is the chief aide to Great King of Hell, Enma (Takashi Nagasako). Hoozuki is effectively the trouble-shooter who visits the various areas of hell, which are effectively run like departments of a company, and ensures that the whole operation is running smoothly. During his day job he encounters many figures from Japanese history and mythology.

The latest TV series went down well with fans and episodes were compiled into movies and screened in cinemas. This project looks like it is based on new material. The Yamato Wiki states that the movie “occurs between the events of “The Faraway Promised Land” and “The Forever War.” Anime News Network have a plot synopsis that explains what is happening with the film:

2199 AD. Yamato tried to leave behind the Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy, after receiving a “Cosmo Reverse System” at its destination, Iscandar. However, suddenly, it encounters a mysterious group at the edge of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The crew finds out that the group is called the “Gatlantis,” and that its leader is the Gutaba expeditionary force commander who calls himself “Goran Dagaamu of Thunder.” The commander demands that Yamato be handed over to him. Yamato, wanting to hurry to Earth, escapes the fray. However, Yamato is attacked by a devastating beam weapon called the “Flame Direct Attack Cannon” that can transcend space.

Yamato was able to retreat, but ends up getting lost, and finds itself in a strangely colored irregular dimension. The crew decides to turn off the engine on the ship, and explore a mysterious planet. In order to collect information, Kodai, Kiryū, Sawamura, Niimi, and Aihara land on the planet. What they saw when they arrived was a ship that was not supposed to be there.

Dagaamu chases after the traces of Yamato’s warp, and also reaches the strangely colored space. The planet on which Yamato landed was in fact what Dagaamu had been looking for all along.
