The live action Blade of the Immortal film opened in Japan last weekend. Hiroaki Samura’s violent samurai manga of the same name began serialization in 1993 and has already inspired an anime TV series (2008) which was released in the UK on DVD by MVM Films.
The live action film is directed by Takeshi Miike, whose previous manga to live action adaptations includes works as varied as Ace Attorney, Terra Formars and Ichi the Killer. It will be screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
In Blade of the Immortal, the titular immortal is Manji, an amoral wandering samurai who is ordered to kill 1000 evil men to be freed from his curse.
