Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun Volumes 9 and 10 Review

We left Volume 8 with Iruma and his friends going to Walter Park, an amusement park in the demon world. They are accompanied by three chaperones: Opera and professors Kalego and Balam, and the students decide to compete to see who has the most fun. Divided into three groups, they go off to different rides and areas of the park.

Opera’s and Professor Balam’s groups seem to be having the most fun. Especially Iruma who has never been to an amusement park with friends; he’s enjoying as many rides as he can without getting tired. When Ronove, a schoolmate, bumps into Iruma’s team (supervised by Balam) he joins them. In fact, Ronove is the son of the owner of the park, and he has quite the peculiar personality—he’s an exuberant demon who enjoys talking in third person. Iruma seems to be the only one to be able to follow Ronnie’s enthusiasm… at least until he gets lost.

Walter Park was originally a place where demons went to ride out their evil cycle, and although it’s now a pretty safe place, there are still some areas that could be considered dangerous as ‘black market’ deals still happen. And of course, Iruma finds his way right there. When he almost gets kidnapped by a demon, another demon comes to his rescue. Now back to the ‘light’ and fun area of the park, Iruma still gets lost, and it’s only thanks to this unknown demon that he’s able to reunite with his friends.

Everything seems to be joyful again, until a few sudden explosions make three gigantic, summoned beasts appear. As the readers can imagine, the magical beasts show up where the three groups of students are. While Iruma and his group are safe, he notices that some demon children are left behind in the rubble. While the adult demons only think to save themselves, as that’s the demon nature, Iruma doesn’t hesitate to go for the children, thus making his group members collaborate to fight the beast.

The group led by Opera instead is full of the female demons from the Misfit class, plus Ameri, the student council president. Gentle demon that he is, Opera fights the beast to let the others escape, only for Ameri to come back to support. And for the first time in the series, Ameri shows her full power!

The group led by Professor Kalego has to deal with their beast on their own; Kalego won’t waste this opportunity to let his students learn by fighting the beast themselves.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun Volume 10 cover

With 10 volumes under our belts, the readers now know that Iruma can’t ever enjoy a peaceful event. Something is always bound to happen. And although it is shown to the readers who the culprits are and why the attack on Walter Park happened, Iruma and his friends don’t. Under the park, there is a prison whose prisoners’ work supplies magical power for the attractions above, and someone from Iruma’s past who’s been imprisoned there has a plan to escape.

The readers keep being omniscient while Iruma and his people get hints of the culprits and what’s behind the terror attack. However, it’s not enough for them to have the full picture. We know that something else is bound to happen, and now we just have to wait for it.

These two volumes also show quite a development for Iruma’s and his classmates. We already know that Ameri os strong, but we are finally shown how much when she gives her all to fight the demonic beast. Asmodeus and Sabnock also team up for the first time to fight the beast while Iruma saves the children. The two of them have quite different personalities, but it’s thanks to this fight that we find out the depth of the Misfit Class camaraderie. The team led by Professor Kalego instead is basically on its own. While Kalego enjoys a drink, the students have to figure out how to deal with the beast on their own. Thankfully they are all smart enough to figure out their strengths and how to combine them to fight… otherwise the series might have changed genre due to the passing of its students!

While there has always been some sort of fighting in the previous volumes, it’s with Volumes 9 and 10 that we see proper fight scenes for the first time. I think this it will be a growing point for the students to allow them to become even stronger for what is yet to come. Although there is fighting, the scenes don’t turn bloody or gory, but keep that ‘light’ and fun theme that we have encountered so far. The narration is smooth and keeps to the comedy aspect both shown through the characters’ personalities and the story.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is written by Osamu Nishi. It’s published in the English language by Kodansha with a translation by Jacqueline Fung, and Volume 11 is slated for release in December.
