Studio Ghibli & Polygon Pictures’ Ronja the Robber’s Daughter is coming to Blu-ray

The CG Ghibli x Polygon Pictures series is now heading to home video here in the UK!

Polygon Pictures (Knights of Sidonia) have done a number of projects over these past few years, but one of their earlier works was a collaboration with Studio Ghibli and Goro Miyazaki (From Up on Poppy Hill). That collaboration was a television anime adaptation for Ronja the Robber’s Daughter (Ronja Rövardotter), a 1981 Swedish children’s fantasy tale written by Astrid Lindgren. The story received a couple adaptations in the past but this adaptation is computer generated and cel shaded in Japanese anime form. The show is also known as Sanzoku no Musume Ronja in Japan and aired during the Autumn 2014 anime season (October 2014).

The series is now coming to the UK on home video thanks to Studio Canal, whom have also released the entire Studio Ghibli catalogue as well as Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, The Little Norse Prince (Horus, Prince of the Sun) and the recent Japanese/French collaborated film The Red Turtle.

All 26 episodes of Ronja the Robber’s Daughter will be available in its entirety in a complete series box set on both Blu-ray and DVD. This is also marks the show’s first English release outside Japan.

While details are scarce at the time of this post, there is an English dub which is also available to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime but it’s unknown whether the original Japanese audio with English subtitles will be included with the release.

The English dub does feature an all-star British focused cast which is not common with anime given the last British dub that we know of was with Ghibli’s Arrietty. Gillian Anderson of The X-Files voices the Narrator of the series, with Giles New (Pirates of the Caribbean), Morwenna Banks (Peppa Pig), Rasmus Hardiker (Thomas & Friends), and Teresa Gallagher (Demon City Shinjuku) also part of the cast.

You can pre-order the series via Amazon on Blu-ray and DVD.
