Next February, Los Angeles will be celebrating the creativity and talent of the animation industry with the 45th Annie Awards, which will be taking place on 3rd February 2018. With the nominations announced today, Disney’s Coco may be leading the pack with thirteen nods, but three Japanese anime titles have picked up nominations of their own: In This Corner of the World, Napping Princess and Mary and the Witch’s Flower.
Sunao Katabuchi’s critically acclaimed wartime drama In This Corner of the World has been nominated for Best Animated Feature – Independent, alongside Kenji Kamiyama’s fantasy adventure Napping Princess. They will face competition from Loving Vincent, The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales and The Breadwinner.
Studio Ponoc’s Mary and the Witch’s Flower, from former Studio Ghibli up-and-comer Hiromasa Yonebayashi, has received nods for Production Design in an Animated Feature Production, where it will face stiff competition from Coco, Ferdinand, LEAP! and The Breadwinner. The film also picked up a nod for Writing in an Animated Feature Production, with other nominated films in the category being Coco, Loving Vincent and The Breadwinner.
