5 Centimeters per Second is Coming to Blu-ray from Manga Entertainment this October!

Distributor Manga Entertainment have announced more additional titles to their Autumn/Q4 2018 release slate and one of them is another surprise Blu-ray upgrade.

Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters per Second is coming to Blu-ray starting 29th October 2018 for SRP £15.99. It will be released as a standard Blu-ray set in both English (Crunchyroll dub) & Japanese audio with English subtitles. The distributor has confirmed that it will be using the same audio types that Discotek Media have used for their US Blu-ray release; English 2.0, Japanese 2.0 & DTS-HD MA 5.0.

The film was theatrically released in Japan in March 2007 and is the second main feature-length film by director Makoto Shinkai, following his short film Voices of a Distant Star and feature length film The Place Promised in Our Early Days (these two have been released on Blu-ray by Anime Limited for those interested!). The director eventually worked on Children Who Chase Lost Voices (released by Manga & Kaze), The Garden of Words (released by Anime Limited) and the critically acclaimed Your Name (released by Anime Limited). At the time of this article, he is currently working on his next feature-length anime project.

Plot Synopsis via Manga Entertainment:

Beginning with the lyrical image of cherry blossoms falling at five centimetres a second Makoto Shinkai paints a breathtakingly vivid tableau of young love, desire, loss and hope. Told in three breathtaking chapters we follow the young dreamer Takaki through his life as cruel winters cold technology silence and finally adult obligations and responsibility converge to crush the delicate petals of true love. Finding beauty in everyday objects and moments Shinkai reveals he is a master of animation and haunting beautiful storytelling. Fall in love with this gorgeous thoughtful film hailed by critics and audiences alike for its beauty truth and innovation in animation.

This is an interesting announcement, as 5 Centimeters per Second was once planned to be released on the Blu-ray format just over half a decade ago, but eventually got cancelled. This was around the time where the distributor had started releasing their titles on Blu-ray and the film was caught up in licensing issues. The film was mostly never made available on Blu-ray outside its own territory, which received two versions (Japanese only and a Global Edition featuring multiple languages including English), and also one or two European territories.

5 Centimeters per Second also received two different English dubs, one done by ADV and another by Crunchyroll. However only the Crunchyroll dub is included in all current releases, including Manga’s previous DVD release and also Discotek’s US release.

If you can’t wait to own the film it’s already available on DVD by the same distributor. You can pre-order the Blu-ray version at Amazon UK in the meantime.
