I’m Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness Volumes 2 and 3 Review

Back in October, Kodansha debuted the manga adaptation of I’m Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness to go alongside the TV anime’s debut. Now the anime has been and gone, but there’s still plenty more of this series as Kodansha have continued releasing it at a quick pace. With that in mind, let’s check out Volumes 2 and 3 of this fantasy series.

In the first book, we meet protagonist Allen Crawford and Princess Charlotte Evans who has fled from a neighbouring country, having been abused by her family and accused of crimes she didn’t commit. Allen can’t turn a blind eye to her plight and decides to let her hide out at his mansion where he will indulge her in all things ‘naughty’ (this boils down to staying up late, eating sweets for dinner and so on).

Since then the days pass peacefully until Allen’s adoptive sister Eruca Crawford arrives, having been searching for Allen to bring him back to the family home. At first, Eruca assumes that Charlotte is Allen’s girlfriend, but once her circumstances are explained, Eruca challenges Allen to a duel of naughtiness to find out who can best satisfy Charlotte!

This also sees the trio take a trip into town, with Charlotte in disguise, of course. Here she’s treated to all kinds of things including new clothes and a rest stop at a popular café. It’s not all fun and games though, as they also run into a group of unsavoury adventurers, but Allen soon sets them straight…

Volume 3 meanwhile sees Charlotte take her first solo trip into town where she’s hoping to do some shopping without Allen by her side. Allen, of course, is beside himself with worry as he fears Charlotte may run into trouble. So together with Eruca and the friendly catgirl delivery woman Miacha Bastetos, the trio secretly follow Charlotte and put a stop to anyone who wishes to do her harm.

Although Allen is only aiming to protect Charlotte, the residents of the town are still thankful for his efforts and decide to band together to gift him and Charlotte a trip to a luxury hot springs resort. There the two can relax and indulge themselves in some naughty fun away from home, playing in the pool and visiting a nearby zoo. But trouble is never far behind and it’s not long before the duo find themselves caught up in a new problem involving magical beasts.

Throughout these two volumes of Disgraced Noble Lady, we get to see plenty of new sides to Allen and Charlotte and they continue to prove fun to watch over. The introduction of Eruca also proves interesting as not only does it give us a glimpse into the kind of character Allen was before he met Charlotte, but it gives her a peer to call a friend. Sure, she’s had Miacha up until now, but Miacha isn’t as involved with the story overall as Eruca proves to be.

The romance between Allen and Charlotte is steadily moving along as well. I’m not sure either of them is ready to confess their feelings, but it’s clear to everyone around them that they’re in love. While my summary of these two volumes might not sound like a lot happens or that it’s fairly mundane, it has to be said that there’s a lot of subtle progress happening. We don’t need every chapter to revolve around some big turning point, as long as the stories and cast are interesting – which is certainly the case here. Thanks to mangaka Ichiho Katsura’s clean, expressive and attractive artwork there’s plenty to enjoy as you flip through the pages of these two books.

And I think if you weren’t a fan of Volume 1 revolving around just Allen and Charlotte, as well as being set exclusively in the mansion, these two entries will prove refreshing. Now the cast is growing, there’s more for the comedy to bounce off of and even just having the town as a regular set-piece as opposed to staying in the mansion has refreshed things quite a bit, preventing the series from going stale. Certainly, I think this has justified checking out Volume 2 if you were on the fence previously or enjoyed the anime but were unsure about giving this adaptation a look.

As mentioned previously, I’m Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness Volumes 2 and 3 come to the West thanks to Kodansha under their Vertical imprint. It continues to be translated by Jan Cash with editing by Alexandria McCullough-Garcia and the release reads well with no issues. Both books open with colour pages and include a relevant short story from original author Fukada Sametarou, which are always nice extras to have!

Volume 4 of the series is set for an English release in March, with #5 following in May. So we’re staying on the bi-monthly release schedule for now, which gives fans plenty to look forward to in the coming months. J-Novel Club have also recently finished translating Volume 3 of the original light novels, which brings them up to date with the Japanese releases for anyone interested in those.

Overall, these two new volumes of I’m Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness remain entertaining. With some changes of scenery and a new main character, there’s plenty to enjoy here while we watch over Allen and Charlotte’s budding romance.
