A Reincarnated Witch Spells Doom Volumes 3 and 4 Review

At the end of Volume 2, high-ranking people became aware that Sena is the Caller, able to kill and control dragons. How could they let someone with her power go? And that’s why Sena finds herself unexpectedly engaged to Keith.

It comes as a shock as Keith never wanted to chain Sena down. She’s not too upset by the engagement rumours because she wants to help the dragons and also help Keith. However, when a neighbouring empire declares war unless Sena goes to them, the young lady realises that she is much more sought after than she thought.

The Empire of Phondona requests Sena’s presence to prove she’s really the Caller. But when she gets there, accompanied by Keith, all she finds are chained dragons, including Gideon, the fire dragon king who is in thrall to Emperor Isaac and does all his bidding. But is there more to this than meets the eye? Sena knows she can’t trust Emperor Isaac, and the only way she can escape and free the dragons is to learn more magic. Can Keith teach her well enough to escape? And what is the bond that Keith and Sena have? Fire Dragon King Gideon might have the answers they need, but the appearance of a new dragon queen postpones whatever truth was about to come to light.

A Reincarnated Witch Spells Doom Volume 4 cover

Since Sena met Keith, she’s been a participant in one adventure after the other, including being kidnapped. However, she can’t complain as she’s happy to explore more of the world and it’s all thanks to Keith. She’s grateful to him and she wants to help him in any way she can. It’s up to Keith to make sure no one chains her to their own kingdom or uses her for their nefarious plans. It’s not easy, as it’s taking time for Sena to grow into herself and her powers, but when Gideon announces what Keith is to Sena, a lot of the care that he has shown her makes sense, although Sena still thinks Keith takes care of her as a mother would. What Keith’s role really entails is still obscure, as readers are only given hints based on what they have read in these four volumes.

The introduction of Emperor Isaac also opens the door for major secondary characters’ appearances in the development of the story. Although the issue with the Fire Dragon King is resolved, readers can assume that they will see more of Gideon and Isaac as they still have a part to play, and I’m sure it will impact Sena’s story.

Readers leave Sena embarking on a new mission, this time in a kingdom affiliated with the Water Dragon Queen, Sealiene. She has come to Sena to ask for her help as a Caller, but Sena still has a lot to learn about her powers and what seems to be Sealiene’s issue, so off she goes to her kingdom.

A Reincarnated Witch Spells Doom is a shojo story and focuses on the characters’ personal growth. Romance is to be expected; however, it seems that it will take a while longer before readers can start shipping the protagonists together. Their relationship is slow-burn and there isn’t  much, if any, change in these initial volumes. The protagonists need a push to realize they are feeling something other than the ‘mother role taking care of her daughter’, which Keith has down to a T.

A Reincarnated Witch Spells Doom is written by Tail Yuzuhara and illustrated by Sora. Yen Press published the English edition with a translation by Kevin Gifford. Volume 5, 6 and 7 are already out.
