2013 Fall Anime Season Preview Picks
The last season of the year is soon upon us and 2013 has been shaping up to being a decent year for anime in my view, so I’m hoping this fall season sends 2013 out with a bang and not a whimper. Here are another five that I would recommend you check out.
Kill La Kill
Kill La Kill is on so many next season anticipated lists that this really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that I’ve put this here, but a few may wonder why this is.
The animation studio Trigger are formed of former Gainax members that worked on shows like Gurren Lagann and Panty and Stocking; these titles were popular all over the world and well received for the most part. This will be Trigger’s first proper TV series (The first project was Inferno Cop which I reviewed early this year).
The synopsis and trailer seem to show a very stylised and action-packed anime that will hopefully blow everyone away, I can’t wait to check this out.
Hajime No Ippo: The Rising
I was considering not putting the thirrd season on the list, since the anime was never released or streamed in the UK but in recent seasons we have had sequel seasons streamed anyway (for example Hidamari Sketch S4 was shown on Anime On Demand) so I thought I may as well.
Hajime No Ippo is a boxing anime and a very great one. It always seems to get the comedy, drama and characters right for the most part and the boxing matches always leave me on the edge of my seat, much like how I felt when watching Giant Killing two years ago.
Not many of the staff names have been revealed but studio Madhouse and VAP are still animating the third season, so I’m guessing all the staff and cast will remain the same. If you have somehow watched the previous two seasons, then you can’t miss this.
Samurai Flamenco
My season picks always seem to contain a noitaminA title and this season is no exception; while Galilei Donna looks a bit too generic for my tastes, Samurai Flamenco sounds and looks much more exciting.
The main reason I’m excited is because this will be directed by Takahiro Omori (Baccano, Durarara, Princess Jellyfish) who I’m a fan of and the super sentai synopsis and trailer sounds like the show will be very fun, which I always get when I watch a show he’s directing.
The only strange thing about this anime is that Omori will not be making Samurai Flamenco with Studio Brains Base, this time it will be studio Manglobe. Still, I look forward to what this show has to offer.
Coppelion
It seems that studio GoHands keeps making these pretty looking trailers along with a really beautiful track alongside it, it’s like ‘K’ all over again but what I got from the trailer is a lot of cool stuff going on.
This season seems to hold a bunch of exciting action shows but Coppelion so far teases what will most be in store, I just hope it doesn’t turn into something disappointing like Btooom! that aired a while back.
The synopsis actually reminds me a lot of the video game called S.T.A.L.K.E.R and I hope some interesting ideas are discussed in this Japan nuclear fallout, so this could be a show to keep an eye on.
Pupa
Pupa is a wild pick due to the fact that I’ve not been a fan of studio Deen recently but I can’t ignore that it’s directed by Tomomi Michizuki who worked on the fantastic House Of Five Leaves back in 2013.
We have had no PVs or a proper poster advertisement by the time this had been posted, so this might be kept quiet until it starts airing but the synopsis sounds very dark – and dare I say – has some horror elements.
I know that horror in anime is extremely hard to pull off but this is what I’m getting from Pupa and with a decent director behind, I’m hoping this will be one of the surprises of the season.
