Your Name Director’s New Film, “Weather Child: Wandering With You”, Opens Next Year

After Makoto Shinkai’s time-travelling romance Your Name became a global phenomenon in 2016, anime fans and film critics alike have been waiting for news on how the celebrated director will follow-up what many consider to be his pièce de résistance. Today, animation studio CoMix Wave Films (Your Name) announced that Weather Child: Wandering With You will open in Japanese cinemas on 19th July 2019. While details have yet to be confirmed, Makoto Shinkai has confirmed that releases are already planned in Europe, North America, Asia and South America.

Makoto Shinkai will be writing and directing the story, with character designs by Masayoshi Tanaka (The Anthem of the Heart). Atsushi Tamura (The Cat Returns) will be serving as animation director, with art direction by Hiroshi Takiguchi (The Garden of Words).

Synopsis (Re-worded from Anime News Network’s translation):

The film tells the story of Hodaka, a high school boy who moves from his isolated island home to the city of Tokyo – but immediately becomes broke! After finally finding work at a shady occult magazine, the sky rains every day until amidst the hustle and bustle of the big city, he meets a young woman called Hina. She lives a cheerful life with her younger brother, but also has a certain power: to stop the rain and clear the sky.

Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name was released in cinemas nationwide by Anime Limited in November 2016, where it was nominated for Best Film at the BFI London Film Festival, prior to a home video release last year. The distributor has also released Shinkai’s previous titles Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days as a double-pack, as well as The Garden of Words on standalone DVD and Blu-ray. Additionally, Manga UK have released 5 Centimeters per Second on DVD, and as of this year, Blu-ray.
